CSJ 101: Introduction to Brave Spaces

The Kick-Off Event for CSJ2015!

Location

On Campus : The Commons, Room 329

Date & Time

February 16, 2015, 12:00 pm1:30 pm

Description

At last year's inaugural CSJ 101 we explored the big question of "What is critical social justice?" This year we'll jump off from that starting point and incorporate this year's CSJ theme to include the question "What are brave spaces in the context of critical social justice?"

Why are brave spaces different from safe spaces? What challenges and possibilities exist in creating brave spaces? And what does that mean within an academic setting? Or in your student organization or staff meetings? Or within yourself?  UMBC students and staff will kick off these important questions in a moderated "fishbowl" discussion. All are invited to participate and join in on the conversation!

This discussion will be live tweeted (#CSJ2015) and then turned into a set of "working assumptions" we will provide as a road map to ensure a brave safe setting for all other CSJ events throughout the week.

CSJ 101 Moderator:
Donna-Lee Mahabeer (The Commons Programs & Services Coordinator; Women's Center Advisory Board member)

Invited Participants Include:
-Alexis Melville (Counseling Center Staff Psychologist/Multicultural Serivces Coordinator)
