Due to updated COVID-19 policy, our space will have a limited number of 15 people in our lounge. Try to arrive early or on time! Unfortunately, we will have to turn people away once it reaches 15 people.
A discussion group for Women + Gender Minorities in STEM at UMBC. On Friday, December 10th from 2-3:30 PM in the Women's Center lounge, our guest facilitator will be Dr. Mercedes Burns, Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences who will discuss the gender pay gaps within the STEM profession. Dr. Burns will also discuss negotiation strategies for addressing the gender pay gap.
Dr. Mercedes Burns is an assistant professor in the department of Biological Sciences at UMBC, and has a Ph.D. from UMCP in evolutionary biology. Her research focuses on the evolution of sex and sexual conflict, especially in arthropods.
Dr. Burns offers a little preview; "A large body of evidence exists for gender gaps in both economic means and negotiation performance. I believe negotiation practice is extremely helpful for people in STEM, and I have used negotiation techniques successfully in several areas of my life. I'll talk about some negotiation strategies that have worked for me and open the floor to others to ask about and brainstorm negotiation tactics to improve satisfaction in deal-making."
