Our Survivor Advocate

How Can the Survivor Advocate Support You?

If you are experiencing gender-based harm, including abuse in your relationship or sexual assault, or are struggling to cope with mental health due to experiencing violence, we are here for you. Walk in to the Women’s, Gender, and Equity Center, or email or call to schedule an in-person or virtual appointment with our survivor advocate.

We can:

  • Provide a confidential, non-judgemental space for you to talk about your experiences
  • Share information about your rights and legal options
  • Help you create a safety plan and identify coping strategies
  • Provide referrals to campus and community resources

Advocacy

We also provide ongoing support for students, faculty, and staff who have experienced gender-based harm. The role of an advocate is to empower survivors to make informed decisions, and support survivors in prioritizing their safety and autonomy as they connect to the resources they need.

We can:

  • Offer ongoing one-on-one meetings for emotional support and processing. Topics can include: processing experiences of harm and the impact on your life, talking about boundaries and consent, building healthy relationships, recognizing red flags of abuse, identifying self-care and coping strategies, practicing how to talk about experiences of harm with family and friends, and more.
  • Provide information about your reporting options. If you choose to report, we can accompany you through the process of reporting to the Title IX office or police, and can support you throughout the investigative process. Whether or not you want to report is always your choice.
  • Case management- help with identifying resource needs and coming up with a plan. Our advocate can meet with you to help schedule appointments, complete paperwork, and connect with resources both on and off campus.
  • Ongoing safety planning, including talking through your specific safety concerns and identifying strategies to stay safe on and off campus.

Discussion Group: We Believe You

A bi-weekly group for survivors and their allies, providing a space for peers to share experiences, build community, and learn tools and strategies to heal from and prevent gender-based violence.

We Believe You holds discussions every other week, on Thursdays from 1-2pm!
